Now that going to the gym is pretty much out of the question due to COVID19, workout fanatics have had to find other ways to get their gains.
But getting a good workout at home isn’t quite as easy as just rolling out a yoga mat in your living room. If you’re having trouble staying motivated during your quarantine routine, try these six simple tips.
#1 Create your workout space
Nothing can get you out of your groove quicker than knocking over a lamp during cardio. Before you start your workout, it’s important to clear plenty of space to move around. Now that you’re spending more time at home, it might be time to start building out your home gym. Whether you go for dumbbells, resistance bands, kettlebells, or pull-up bars, there are plenty of websites that can help you figure out the best equipment for you.
#2 Write down your workout plan
If you don’t commit to a schedule, it can be easy to just slack off on your fitness plan. By writing down your exact workout, including all the moves, number of reps, and number of sets, you can push yourself to keep going. There are plenty of online resources that can help you figure out a routine if you’re just starting out. In general, it’s good to do a mix of cardio, lower body moves like squats, arm moves like push-ups, and core moves like plank holds.
#3 Get dressed
While it may seem like a small part of your gym routine, getting dressed in gym clothes that make you feel confident is crucial. “Look good, feel good” is a familiar saying that still rings true. It may be tempting to just throw on those old sweatpants, but getting dressed in your typical gym outfit can help you get in the right mindset to train hard.
#4 Grab a friend
We can’t see each other physically, but we can still connect through video conferencing. To help keep you going, try enlisting a friend to work out together. You can watch the same fitness video or decide on your own routine together. As you go through it, make sure you shout some words of encouragement to each other and keep the energy high.
#5 Blast some tunes
Music can be the ultimate motivator. If you have neighbors to worry about, try wireless headphones or earbuds. If not, crank up those speakers and let the gains begin. Instead of having to keep selecting a song and interrupting your flow, make sure you choose a playlist with plenty of upbeat songs to keep you going.
#6 Film yourself
If you’re not usually one to step in front of the camera, this one might sound a little strange. But filming your workouts can be a great way to keep you motivated and help you improve your form. Set up your camera on a stable surface and test the framing to make sure you can actually see yourself. As you’re working out, the fact that there’s a camera on you will make you want to push even harder. After you’re done, check out the tape and see where you could improve. If you don’t want to share it, then you can safely delete it without anyone else even knowing.
